This workshop is for Cadette Girl Scouts who want to take an idea for a 2D video game and make it a reality. This workshop examines basic programming techniques, but also looks at the other disciplines needed to create a game, including game design, art production, and sound design. Scouts will gain a new appreciation for the hard work that goes into making their favorite games and they will also understand the underlying academic knowledge needed to pursue a career in the game industry. Finally, Girl Scouts who complete this workshop will also earn the official "Cadette Coding for Digital Game Design" badge!

You will learn:
  • The video game production process, including writing design documents, game testing, and problem solving
  • Game design principles, including game balance and effective interface design
  • Coding basics such as variables, conditionals, iterations, and functions
  • Art production processes and tools

Participants must be age 12 tor 14 years old and will need to have access to a computer as well:

  • Windows PC or Mac computer
  • Broadband internet connection
  • Display with minimum resolution of 1024 x 768. Because of the nature of this class, it is recommended to have a second monitor connected to the computer to extend the desktop. This allows the student to more easily follow what the instructor is demonstrating while concurrently being able to see the software environment that the student is working within. A good alternative to a second computer monitor is a tablet (eg. iPad, Kindle Fire, etc.) with internet access that could be used to display the instructor's screen.
  • Web camera
  • Headset with microphone
  • Three-button mouse
  • Chrome, Firefox web browser

Orientation Session:

Please note that in order to ensure that students have their home computers set up correctly for the class, and to orientate students to learning in an online environment, there will be a 30-minute scheduled orientation session that will run the week before the workshop is scheduled to start. Information about this will be sent to students by the instructor the week before the start of the workshop.

Participants must be 12 to 14 when the program starts.

This class is open to females only.
