Description

This course will teach you the fundamental concepts and logic to begin programming in any language. Ideal for those wishing to get started with programming but who may not be focused on game programming, you will understand aspects of application development and practice programming with a variety of coding examples to develop your foundation in computer science. Finally, Girl Scouts who complete this workshop will also earn the official "Junior Coding for Good Coding Basics" badge!

You will learn:

  • Applications of computer science beyond video games
  • Data types
  • Variables
  • Conditional statements
  • Arrays
  • Functions
  • Output and Input

Participants must be age 10 or 11 years old, and will need to have access to a computer as well:

  • Windows PC or Mac computer
  • Broadband internet connection
  • Display with minimum resolution of 1024 x 768. Because of the nature of this class, it is recommended to have a second monitor connected to the computer to extend the desktop. This allows the student to more easily follow what the instructor is demonstrating while concurrently being able to see the software environment that the student is working within. A good alternative to a second computer monitor is a tablet (eg. iPad, Kindle Fire, etc.) with internet access that could be used to display the instructor's screen.
  • Web camera
  • Headset with microphone
  • Three-button mouse
  • Chrome, Firefox web browser

Orientation Session:

Please note that in order to ensure that students have their home computers set up correctly for the class, and to orientate students to learning in an online environment, there will be a 30-minute scheduled orientation session that will run the week before the workshop is scheduled to start. Information about this will be sent to students by the instructor the week before the start of the workshop.
