Description

This Studio is ideal if you have prior experience programming apps or even video games, and you want to enhance both your logic and coding skills. The Programming and Software Engineering Studio experience begins with the instructor assessing your knowledge and skills as well as discussing your programming interests. Perhaps you would like to try programming in a different language or would like to understand how to use pointers. Perhaps you would like to understand how to program a mobile app that tracks what you eat, or maybe you want to become more proficient with scripting a game engine like Unity. The instructor will then develop an individualized learning plan that takes into consideration the type of programming outcome you would like to focus on. Using an inquiry-based approach, the instructor will then facilitate your learning plan through a variety of challenges that will reinforce computer science knowledge and programming skills.

Benefits of Studio format:

  • Emphasis on individual growth through personalized assessment and learning plan for each student
  • Instructor focus to ensure fluency with computer science concepts and programming logic skills
  • Access to a variety of programming environments
  • Engaging project work that is aligned with student interest and that emphasizes software engineering process
  • Given the individualized nature of the course, this studio is designed to be repeatable.

Prerequisites:

  • Given the nature of the Studio format, basic programming knowledge and experience is required.

Technical Requirements:

Students must have access to a computer as well as additional hardware and software. Some programs or courses may indicate additional technology requirements, and not all programs are Mac compatible.

  • Windows PC or Mac computer
  • Display with minimum resolution of 1024 x 768. While it is not mandatory, it is recommended to have a second monitor connected to the computer to extend the desktop. This allows the student to more easily follow what the instructor is demonstrating while concurrently being able to see the software environment that the student is working within.
  • Headset with microphone
  • Three-button mouse
  • Broadband internet connection
  • Current, major internet browser (Chrome, Firefox)
  • Latest version of Adobe Reader

Orientation Session:

Please note that in order to ensure that students have their home computers set up correctly for the class, and to orientate students to learning in an online environment, there will be a 30-minute scheduled orientation session that will run the week before the workshop is scheduled to start. Information about this will be sent to students by the instructor the week before the start of the workshop.
